Homemade Health…Elderberry Syrup and Natural Decongestant/Expectorant

‘Tis the Season….for colds, coughs, and fevers ūüôĀ

Here are two natural remedies you can prepare and keep on hand for the season.¬† The elderberry syrup can be taken preventatively¬†everyday as an immune-boosting tonic.¬† The decongestant/expectorant is strong tasting, but very effective.¬† Here’s to your health ūüôā

Elderberry Syrup

#1  Bring 2 cups of purified water to a boil in a stainless-steel pot.

#2  Turn off the burner and add in 1 cup of dried elderberries.  Cover the pot and steep the berries for 30 minutes.

#3¬† Drain the elderberry “tea” liquid into another pot.¬† Push the berries with the back of a wooden spoon to extract all of the liquid.

#4  Add 1/4 cup of raw honey into the liquid and stir.  Transfer the syrup into a clean, glass jar.

*Store the syrup in the fridge for up to six months!!  Take 1 tablespoon daily as a tonic.

Natural Decongestant/Expectorant

#1  Bring 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice and 1/4 cup of raw apple cider vinegar to a gentle simmer in a stainless steel pot.

#2  Stir in 2 to 3 tablespoons of raw honey and 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper and powdered ginger. [I was out of cayenne pepper and used chipotle chili pepper instead.]

#3  Transfer the liquid into a clean glass jar.  This remedy can be stored on the countertop.

#4  Shake well before drinking.  Take 1 to 2 tablespoons daily as needed.
