An Apple A Day

Colonists in the early 1600s planted the first apple trees in America.  Then John Chapman (later known as Johnny Appleseed) came along in the 1800s to plant untold numbers of apple trees over an area of 100,00 square miles!  This common and lowly fruit is a nutrient powerhouse.  Literally having one every day can have profound effects on heart health.  Soluble fiber in the “meat” of the apple has been shown to reduce the amount of LDL (low-density lipoproteins) particles produced in your liver.  These lipoproteins transport cholesterol and other substances within your bloodstream.  LDL particles are small and can easily be deposited into artery walls, contributing to plaque formation.  This narrows the arteries and can lead to heart attack or stroke.  Insoluble fiber in the skin of the apple attaches itself to LDL particles in your digestive tract and carries them out of your body.  You can see the literal heart health benefit of including an apple into your daily diet!  Apples are easy to take along for the day.  They are nutrient-dense….a medium apple has only 81 calories.  Unfortunately, commercially-grown apples have high levels of pesticide residue and an unnecessary wax coating.  Buy organic and give some love to your heart 🙂
